Basketball Tips: Improving Your Shooting Skills
Rebounding, passing and defense are all important aspects of basketball, but most of your success rests on your ability to shoot the ball through the basket. This article gives the reader tips on how to improve their basketball shooting skills.
Your stance should be balanced with your feet about shoulder width apart. If you're right-handed, your right foot should be slightly ahead of your left and vice versa for lefties. Your knees should be bent as if you were sitting on a rather tall chair, and your shoulders should be almost directly above your knees.
Correct arm position ensures the proper arc and spin on the ball as you release it toward the hoop. While in your shooting stance, place the ball in the palm of your shooting hand and extend your arm straight out in front of you so it forms a 90-degree angle with your body. The ball should rest on the pads of your fingers, and the perimeter of your palm. Make sure the ball does not rest on a flattened palm.
Keeping your fingers pointing away from you, bend your elbow to 90 degrees and keep your elbow in line with your hand. Bend your hand at the wrist until your fingers are pointing toward your shoulder and your palm should be up. The other hand should be placed on the side of and slightly underneath the ball. This hand serves as a sort of shelf from which the ball is shot.
Putting it all together
When you get ready to shoot, your body becomes a coil. As you release your shot, your body should uncoil in a fluid motion. The knees start the motion, and as you reach the highest point of your jump, the arms extend and reach toward the basket. When the arm is almost fully extended, flick your wrist forward and release the ball off your fingertips. This is crucial because the wrist motion keeps the shot from being flat and hard, and it controls the arc of the shot.
Aim at the rim and the arc on the ball will bring it through the hoop. If the motion feels awkward, practice the shot without the jump or shoot the ball against a wall rather than at the basket.
