What is Shotgun Choke?
Read on to learn about the importance of choke in a shotgun barrel.
I recently asked a gun at a gun shop what choke a shotgun was. His reply was that single shots do not have chokes. After handing me the shotgun, I pointed out to the guy the stamping on the barrel indicating that the barrel was a modified choke. This article is being written to teach those who are new to shotguns what choke means to enable them to choose the right choke for the job.
When it comes to shotguns, the term choke is a measurement of a barrel's constriction. For example, a shotgun barrel that has no constriction whatsoever is said to be a cylinder choke. A cylinder choke barrel is the same diameter at the muzzle (front) as it is at the breach (back). The tightest common choke is the full choke. A full choke represents a .035 constriction. This means that the muzzle of the barrel will be .035 inches smaller than the breach. Constriction is added to the barrel to reduce the amount that the shot fired from the barrel spreads. For example, a full choke shotgun will fire a pattern that is about 40 inches wide at 40 yards. Conversely, a cylinder choke gun's pattern will reach 40 inches at only 25 yards. Though there are a number of different chokes, the most commonly encountered are cylinder, improved cylinder, modified and full.
The practical purpose of choke is to make it easier to effectively hit a target at different ranges. Though cylinder choke is actually used very little, the next closest choke is improved cylinder. Improved cylinder is often used for hunting birds and rabbits over dogs. In this scenario, shots are often very quick and the game is moving very fast and a wide pattern makes it easier to hit the target. For turkey hunting and waterfowl hunting, shots are often at a great distance and the animal is much tougher to kill. For these reasons, full choke (or extra-full choke) shotguns are commonly used. The tighter choke will provide more shot to the target increasing the chances of making a humane kill.
As mentioned above, the choke of the barrel will be stamped into the barrel. It should be noted that gunsmiths can change the choke of a barrel which would mean that the factory stamp is no longer accurate, but this is not overly common. Many shotguns have changeable choke tubes. These tubes screw into the barrel to change the choke of the barrel.
