Techniques for Shooting Skeet
The information I learned from a couple of old timers helped my performance on the Skeet Range. Since then I have taken opportunities to pass that information around.
The first thing I learned was posture, and how it affects the shot when it leaves the barrel. Think of your legs as the suspension of a car. If they are stiff and ridged the ride will be uncomfortable. Bend your legs slightly and lean forward on the balls of your feet. Don't lean back on your heels. If you are a right handed shooter then you will lead with your left foot and vise versa. Any gage shotgun above a 410 (20, 16, 12, and 10 gage) will push you backwards and off balance. I recommend shooting a 410, 20, or 12 gage shotgun.
After we learned posturing we took our places onto the range. Here we learned how to lead a target. Leading a target means the barrel of the shotgun is aimed ahead of the target. If you set your sites on the target you will miss every time. The shot will leave the barrel and pass behind the target. Leading allows the shot to reach the target.
They also taught us to shoot under the target. As the shot leaves, the discharge will lift the barrel allowing the shot to pass above target. Good posturing will help add more control to your shot. Remember the suspension example. Shooting under and leading will get you hitting the target on a consistent basis.
So far we have learned posturing, leading, and barrel placement. The last thing that was taught to me was follow-through. Many shooters will pull the trigger and stop. Imagine looking through the barrel at the target. The moment you stop the barrel the target will no longer be visible. This is where the shot will fall. Following-through guides the shot while it leaves the barrel.
I mentioned above what type of shotgun I would recommend. Any shotgun will due as long as it is the only one you practice with. I would watch shooters bring 3 or 4 guns to the range and alternate using them. The problem is that every gun has a different feel and weight. With practice your muscles memory is trained to the movement and feel of the shotgun. Imagine a weightlifter switching his bench-press for a broom handle. The smooth action your muscles are use to will feel awkward. This will affect your leading, barrel placement, and follow-through.
You have just had a crash course on shooting techniques for a Skeet range. Over time the techniques will become second nature. I think about those old timers and the knowledge they passed on to us, and look for opportunities to do the same for other. Remember posturing, leading, barrel placement, and follow-through. You will see improvement in the way you shoot along with practice, practice, practice.
