Obama with a Gun is His Dukakis in the Tank Moment

The Washington Post reports that the White House has released a photo of President Obama firing a weapon in what it claims is an exercise in skeet shooting that took place at Camp David sometime in August, 2020.

COMMENTARY | The Washington Post reports that the White House has released a photo of President Obama firing a weapon in what it claims is an exercise in skeet shooting that took place at Camp David sometime in August.

Some of the president's supporters are making fun of people who have cast doubt that Obama likes to blast away at clay pigeons, an exercise that hitherto has never been revealed. One should not, according to these supporters, be suspicious of photos that show the president using fire arms in the middle of a debate about gun control.

But the president and his supporters seem to be missing the point. The picture of Obama firing apparently level with the ground at what is claimed to be a clay pigeon flying through the air has all the potential of being the subject of ridicule. Indeed, David Letterman, not exactly a member of the vast right-wing conspiracy, has already leaped in feet first in that regard,

The Obama with the gun photo could become his version of the Dukakis in the tank video. Back in 1988, to try to combat his image as a liberal Democrat who disdained the military, Michael Dukakis, then a candidate for president, released a video of himself tooling around in a tank. The images seemed to be so absurd that the video became the object of ridicule and helped to seal his eventual defeat.

The image of Obama blasting away with a shotgun is not exactly something that comes naturally. It is something that, in any case, is tried during a campaign and not in the fifth year of a controversial presidency during a campaign that many feel is using a crisis to take away basic constitutional freedoms.

The White House can play this one of two ways. It can drop the matter and hopes it goes away. Good luck with that in this age of the Internet and photoshop. Or it can double down and start showing the president in all sorts of situations engaging in what Teddy Roosevelt called "the strenuous life."

I suggest going on a hunting trip and, in the spirit of bipartisanship, doing it with Sarah Palin. Think of the conversations that can be had while shooting caribou and moose out in the Alaska wilderness. That alone would be worth the exercise.
