Connecticut’s Chicago-Style Gun Control Will Be Equally Useless
Lawmakers in Connecticut believe their new gun control proposals will stop gun violence. But similar gun restrictions passed into law in Chicago, America's murder capital, have already been proven useless.
COMMENTARY | The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Connecticut lawmakers have reached a "bipartisan agreement" on new gun control measures.
"Democrats and Republicans were able to come to an agreement on a strong, comprehensive bill," said Senate President Donald E. Williams Jr., a Democrat from Brooklyn. "That is a message that should resound in 49 other states and in Washington, D.C. And the message is: We can get it done here and they should get it done in their respective states and nationally in Congress."
Perhaps Williams should pay a little visit to the streets of America's murder capital, where similar gun restrictions have already been passed into law -- Chicago.
Connecticut wants to mandate gun permits. So what? Chicago already mandates gun permits.
Does Williams really believe that, unlike in Chicago, criminals in Connecticut will register their existing weapons and high-capacity magazines with the state?
Have Connecticut's lawmakers figured out how to conduct background checks on those who obtain their guns illegally?
Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard A. Pearson, said Chicago's gun laws "only restrict the law-abiding citizens and they've essentially made the citizens prey."
How will passing the same laws to restrict Second Amendment rights in Connecticut, ironically nicknamed the "Constitution State," be any different?
Mark Barden, whose 7-year-old son, Daniel, was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, further noted to the Associated Press that Connecticut's new gun proposal "doesn't prevent someone from going out of the state to purchase them and then bring them back."
Chicago doesn't even have gun stores or ranges where private citizens can go target shooting. What Chicago did have was 500 homicides in 2020 and 40 murders in just the first months of 2020.
Illinois is also the only state in the nation that denies private citizens the right to carry guns in public.
While that prevents law-abiding citizens in Illinois from carrying a gun in public for self defense, it didn't stop a gang member from shooting the 15-year-old majorette and honor student named Hadiya Pendleton in a Chicago park a week after she performed at Obama's inauguration.
Lawmakers in Connecticut believe banning the sale of an additional 100 assault weapons will protect its citizens.
Lawmakers in Chicago thought the same thing about banning gun stores. But just as water will seek its own level, Chicago's criminals have simply started seeking their guns outside of the city limits.
"As somebody who stood by President Clinton's side to make sure we had a ban on assault weapons," Fox News quoted Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel saying Jan. 4, "I do not want to see more weapons on the street."
But Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said a renewed assault weapons ban will do nothing to stop Chicago's raging gang violence. The weapon of choice among the Windy City's gang members is a handgun, which is rarely purchased through legal channels.
The same holds true in Connecticut.
In the end, just like in Chicago, Connecticut's new "strong, comprehensive" gun control proposals will do little more than restrict the ability of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves.
