Cabin Fever? Northwest Indiana's Great Outdoors at a Comfortable 70 Degrees

The cure for cabin fever in Northwest Indiana isn't necessarily a trip to a Chicago museum. It's right down to road at the Bass Pro Shop.

"Three words," I told her. "Bass Pro Shop."

"Don't they sell guns?" The woman had finally given in and was unwrapping a popsicle.

"Oh, you don't need one." I patted her hand. "I'm sure he's a really good kid."

She may regret the popsicle one day, but I certainly understood the dilemma. While the beaches of Northwest Indiana can be a haven for children in the summer, winters can be bleak. The nearest Children's museum is an hour away: St. Joe or Chicago. Indoor miniature golf and video arcades are fine for older kids, but for preschoolers nothing tops the Disneyland of sporting goods. And it won't cost you rolls of quarters or your sanity.

I should know. A year ago, as temperatures hovered above zero, my 5-year old nephew was either pulling on my sleeve to take him for pizza or begging for another video game. We were driving to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago when I approached the huge yellow Bass Outdoor World sign on I-94 at the Portage exit.

"Why are we getting off here?" he asked looking back at the highway.

"Fishing lures," I told him. "I'm fresh out. Anyway, you've been to the Field a dozen times."

It's a jaw-dropping scene on a kid's first visit. A fireplace you could roast a brontosaurus in greets you at the front door. Under an expansive three-story atrium, wild life stares down from ledges, platforms, staircases and yes, mountainsides. In a flash, my nephew took off toward the glass elevators, but stopped in his tracks when he saw, or heard, a waterfall cascading down the side of a mountain with deer and bears positioned on the terraced slopes. Red foxes and bobcats, a moose the size of a Buick, and every kind of waterfowl you can imagine are stuffed and sewn into taxidermy splendor. And none of them are behind glass. Except the fish. Nestled into the rocks behind the waterfall is the largest fish tank I've seen outside of the Shedd Aquarium.

All this and no admission fee! I was told later that kids can learn to make bird houses, fishing lures and if you get there at the right time, you can watch them feed the fish. I'm not a shill for the place, but the kid-friendly restaurant beat the heck out of a museum cafeteria.

"This was better than the zoo," my nephew said on the way to the car.

"Oh, yeah? Why?"

"It didn't smell like animal poop. What did you like?"

"I like that we'll be home in 15 minutes...and that you look really tired."

I hope the woman in the store took my advice. Giving into tantrums with popsicles is a lousy idea. Preventing them with a little trip to your local hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, camping store can entertain the whole family and maybe give a parent a new lease on...well, parenting.
