Some people think there is a connection between the shooter in the Amish school house, and home schooling. This is a ridiculous theory. Here's why...
A theory about home schoolers has been asserted in "Killer of Amish Girls was Home Schooled And A Loner" by Thomas Gregory. To view the article, click here. . His theory is that children need to be exposed to all forms of unacceptable social behavior in traditional schools in older to deal with those behaviors correctly. I beg to differ. I have four children, all of whom have been in private school, home school, and public school. I chose home schooling to protect my kids from the unacceptable behavior that Mr. Gregory refers to. The problem is that no environment is perfect. Not the home environment, not the private school environment, not the public school environment. We discovered through experience that every setting has its pros and cons.
Every family must determine for themselves what is best for their family, for that time of education. Our home schooling years created a closeness that far exceeds the average siblings. They were each others playmates all day long. They read together, did art together, recessed together, and grew together. It was an awesome time in our family. As they got older, we felt that it was to their advantage to go to school and we enrolled them in a private Christian school. They made great friends, became accustom to being in a classroom, and learned how to respond to a teacher that wasn't their mom. Within a couple of years we met the principle of our district elementary school. He was a wonderful Christian man that ran an exceptional public school. With the rising cost of tuition, we decided to enroll our children that were still in elementary in this public school. What a fabulous experience that was. The children still talk about their former principle to this day. Having been on all sides of the table on this topic, I believe that some home schooled children do not learn to interact well with other children. However, we have known plenty of private and public school children that did not learn to interact well with others, either. I believe this is not determined simply by their schooling, but by their personality, and the experiences that have shaped who they are.
This tragedy has taken place in what most of the country would consider one of the most peaceful places on earth, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It was an attack that no one could have guessed. It was brutal and shocking, and even more shocking were the plans that came to light after the gunman was pronounced dead. His deviant plans for the little girls were thwarted, and the agony of the families was kept to a matter of hours versus a matter of days, as was his plan. His wife and family were as shocked as the rest of the nation. They grieved not only for the Amish families, but also for themselves. It was a crime of a man full of inner turmoil. Not because he wasn't exposed to the horrors of the world as a child, but because the world and all it's evil made it's way into his very soul.
To draw an analogy of violence in traditional schools and home schoolers, the violence in a traditional school far out weighs any violence linked to home schoolers. What reason would the boys from Columbine give if they were to say what led them to a murderous rampage? Would it be the inability to conform to the trends of the popular kids? Would those boys have benefited from a more intimate environment, like the home? No one can truly say. We can not pretend to be God, and pretend to know what the right decision for every child is. Even our own children. We do our best, as did Charles Carl Roberts parents. But our kids have choices to make, and when they reach a certain age, only they can make those choices. We can pray and hope that we have raised them right. We have to trust that when we taught them right from wrong - that they got it. There is a verse in the Bible that says, "For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). Every person has the choice to choose God's plan or to not choose His plan. We all choose whether to be honest on our taxes or be dishonest. We have to choose right from wrong every day. It doesn't matter what type of school we went to as children, what matters is what choices we make in everyday life.
Let's keep the issue in perspective and not attack an unsuspecting group of parents that are just trying to do what's best for their kids.
