Choosing Your First .22-Caliber Rifle: Part 1 of 3
For many people, a .22 caliber rifle is their first firearm. The .22-caliber rifle might also be a good first gun for you. This article will explain the advantages of a .22 and is the first in a three-part series intended to help you choose a .22 of your own.
In addition to being economical to shoot, you'll find the recoil from a .22 is negligible. According to wikipedia, a .22 propels a 40-grain bullet with a muzzle velocity of about 1085 feet per second. For new shooters, the cartridge offers enough power to punch holes in paper targets and "plink" soda cans and other convenient targets. For new hunters, a .22 can kill rabbits, squirrels, other small game, and nuisance varmints. The careless should also note that a .22 can also kill or seriously wound people and should be treated with respect. However, the power of a .22 is much less than that of a typical deer hunting rifle. A .30-06 rifle can fire a 150-grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2,910 feet per second. That is nearly four times the bullet mass at nearly three times the velocity. Since physicists tell us that kinetic energy equals mass times velocity squared (KE=1/2mv2), you'll definitely feel the recoil of .30-06. While the recoil from a typical deer rifle is certainly manageable and nothing to fear, a prolonged shooting session can leave a bruise. A .22 rifle has just a little more recoil than a BB gun. It is simply not enough to distract a new shooter or encourage the development of bad habits. After firing about 175 rounds of .22-caliber ammunition in an extended range session, my shoulder was a little tender the next day from holding my rifle tightly into my shoulder. However, I'd typically have a bruise after only a few shots from my more powerful 6.5mm Mauser. The combination of low cost and low recoil will spare your shoulder and allow you to get lots of practice with your new .22-caliber rifle. The .22 Long Rifle cartridge is very accurate and is used by Olympic marksmen.
The recoil and power of a .22 does not place much stress on your firearm either. As a result, many .22 rifles are inexpensive and most .22 rifles can last forever with minimal routine maintenance and little chance of a failure. Other than routine cleaning, there is little maintenance to perform. A quality American-made .22 rifle from Marlin can be had for less than $200. Similarly rifle scopes and other accessories for .22 rifles don't need to be overbuilt to handle the shock of recoil. Thus, you can buy a scope for a .22 rifle for as little as $20.
