A review of Shogun Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky.
On most of my visits to Shogun, I have chosen to sit in the hibachi grill section of the restaurant. People sit around a high U-shaped table with a large griddle in the center. A chef stands at the cook station and prepares your food while you watch. The tables are designed for large groups, so know that you may be seated with other patrons if your group does not fill the table.
Dining in this way can be very entertaining! The chef at your hibachi table will put on a show as he cooks. He may throw eggs in the air and catch them in his hat or pocket, build things out of the food he is cooking, or even try to get you to catch small wads of rice in your mouth as he flips it toward you.
Food portions at Shogun are plentiful. A meal at the hibachi grill will get you a small salad, soup, a mountain of rice, grilled vegetables, a couple of grilled shrimp, plus your entrée. Prices for these meals average around $18.95, but can be a few dollars less or much more depending on what you get. On a recent trip, a friend ordered filet mignon and lobster tail for a price of $29.95. All of the food I have tried at Shogun has been delicious!
Meals in the regular, non-hibachi side of the restaurant appear to be slightly cheaper with smaller portions. There is also a sushi bar located in this area of the restaurant. The Shogun location on Westport Road has sushi specials on Wednesday nights for those who might want to try something new.
Aside from the entertaining and efficient hibachi chefs, I have found the service at Shogun to be mediocre at best. Wait staff at the hibachi grill are efficient at removing dirty dishes between courses, but getting a drink refill can take a very long time. On a recent trip to the sushi bar, my group was still waiting for our first round of sushi while the table behind us (who had arrived after we did) was already on their second. When we questioned our waitress, she only smiled and appeared not to understand what we had said. Our sushi did finally arrive after more than 20 minutes' wait. We ordered a second round, hoping that the long wait time for the first was a fluke, but it wasn't. The second took just as long, if not longer, and we ended up having to leave before ordering a third round of sushi and dessert as we had planned. It has also been a huge headache in the past when my group has asked the Shogun wait staff for separate checks. More often than not they are incorrect, and asking to have them corrected has rarely had a positive result.
Overall, I would recommend that patrons visit Shogun for the entertainment and delicious food of the hibachi grill. Be prepared for slow service from the wait staff, and read your check carefully when it arrives. Keeping these things in mind, enjoy your visit to Shogun.
