Gun Range Misadventures
My long-time friend Sam was feeling the need to buy a handgun and asked if I would like to join him at a shooting range as he tried out various models. After he assured me that Dick Cheney was not on the guest list, I agreed to go.
Even though Sam is a Republican he otherwise exhibits intelligence and high moral fiber. Did I mention we live in Texas? There was no trouble finding a shooting range - they are as ubiquitous as Starbucks.
We met for lunch before our visit to the OK Corral at which time I quizzed him on his perceived need for a handgun. I must admit that his answer did not stick with me which I think means he muttered some nonsense that, loosely interpreted translated to, "all my Tea Party friends in McKinney have one, so I need one too."
As for me, I am not totally clueless. I am aware that all of my neighbors and many of my friends have a handgun or two or twelve. My neighbor across the street recently added on to his house to make room for the armory he is accumulating. In his honor, I put a sign in my yard with an arrow pointing to his house, "Please break into his house; he has lots of expensive guns." The next sign will be the same thing in Spanish once my better half learns Spanish. Seems odd she has been going to Spanish class on Monday night for years but still cannot come up with the words for the sign. Maybe I am clueless.
The bottom line: I do not want to be the last unarmed Texan. But alas I may have already achieved that distinction.
Our first visit was unremarkable. We each got our own lane and rented our own handgun. Mine was a 38 revolver which I was told was idiot proof, and that turned out to be true. I also shot one of the 9mm guns that Sam rented. Turns out I am a pretty good shot.
The second visit made it very clear to me that I should not be trusted with anything even approaching lethal. And I'm wondering about Sam. But in the current state of affairs with the NRA running things, you need a license to cut hair but buying a handgun is not much more complicated than buying groceries.
We decided to save some money by sharing a lane. The very professional and courteous man at the front desk clearly told us lane 9. We proceeded to install our ear protection and then Sam led me to Lane 7. I told him that we are lane 9 but did he listen? No. Did I mention he is a Republican?
So I thought oh okay there aren't many people here, it won't matter. Well you guessed it. In a few minutes, two menacing guys showed up and moved my ear protection enough to say, "This is our lane." Sam did not look too happy about this development and I had visions of a gunfight at OK Corral. But he managed to convince them they should just go to Lane 9.
On this visit I rented a 9mm which is clearly beyond my mental capacity. I had a lot of difficulty getting the shells into the magazine and then the magazine would not go into the gun. Even though Sam is a Republican he is a gentleman. Eschewing leg-slapping laughter, he politely showed me I had put the shells in backwards and that also explained why the magazine would not go into the gun. Bruised thumb and all I managed to get the shells out. They go in a lot easier pointed in the proper direction. Then, like Rambo, I snapped the clip into place forgetting to get my hand out of the way. Oh my, that was painful. I had bruises for weeks.
Fortunately we managed to mainly hit the targets. Truth be known, Sam has a natural hook which means the left side of that paper man was obliterated. We got out of there before inflicting serious damage to ourselves or any of the other customers. We are going back soon but we will have trouble topping that visit.
