New shotgun ammo for 2020
New calibers and ammunition drive the firearms industry faster than any other factor. In world shotgunning the calibers seem to be set in concrete. Innovative pellets and slug designs with higher and higher payload velocities keep the buzz going. There has been some really wild stuff appearing in 2020.
The first odd shot shape to be come across was the FN Shells loaded in Belgium. The lead shot is formed into perfectly square-faced cubes and the shell holding them was marked with the label 'Dispersante'. It could be called a spreader load of sorts, designed for upland covers or hunting ducks and geese over decoys and close work. Square and sharp edges and corners has been known to really cut up tissue and organs at close range but the 'Dispersante' concept is back but under a new, improved label.
Hex Shot
Winchester's new cubical-shaped shot, called a hexahedron, or 'Hex' for short has been approved for waterfowl and the Hex features rounded edges and corners which are not sharp. It is more easily stacked inside the shot cup and provides up to 15 percent more non-toxic shot per shell. The 12-gauge Hex loads come in 3" and 3 '½" with 1 3/8" and 1 5/8" ounce payloads of BBs or No 2s at 1,400 fps being introduced under the 'Blind Side' label. The ad copy reads, 'Hex Shot is designed to hit waterfowl like high-velocity tumbling bricks -- creating massive wound channels, preventing over penetration and maximising energy deposit and knock-down shock within the bird'.
To complement the Hex shot is a new wad, 'Blind Side Diamond Cut Wad'. 'Diamond Cut' is a reference to the three diamond-shaped petals along the side of the wad. These displace once the wad exists the muzzle and acts as tiny air brakes separating the wad from the shot column. It is claimed by Winchester that the new wad improves patterns at all ranges.
Slug Loads
The Latvian firm, D Dupleks, and Brenneke offer some new slugs this year. The most interesting of the D. Dupleks' slug design is a clever blending of a polymer wad, core and bore-riding bands with a metallic, lead-free exoskeleton made of steel. This peels out into six cutting blades upon impact. The slug is designed to expend all of its energy within the target and not to exit. The type of slug and what kind of tissue or bone it strikes dictates its terminal effect. The slug is designed either to fragment with the six steel petals shearing off the main body of the slug and follow separate trajectories to create six separate wound channels or stay together as an enlarged cutting machine.
At the SHOT Show was the D. Dupleks' 2 '½" .410 slug loading, the DUP amp; Short Magnum featuring a 110-grain slug with a muzzle velocity of 1,670 fps. The Taurus Judge and Circuit Judge models use the DUPO 7 which has been optimized for them. The .410 slug is designed to expand to 1" in diameter and then to create seven wound channels by fragmenting. This will find an additional home when Smith and Wesson's new 6-shot .410 revolver, the 'Governor' beings to arrive on the dealers' shelves. On offer are a variety D. Dupleks high-tech slugs or the 12, 16 and 20 gauges available from DKG Trading which is their US distributor.
With a variety of new slugs is Brenneke of America. Their slugs are being loaded for them by Polywad for strict quality control purposes. Brenneke slugs are of a more conventional line but highly accurate and stable whether fired from a rifled-shotgun barrel or a smoothbore and still offer deep penetration with minimal deformation.
Brenneke's new catalog is filled with color photographs of comparative slug tests made by Tom Burczynski, who invented bullets like the Hydra-Shok and is the terminal ballistics genius. There are illustrations of terminal performances of five brands of slugs in comparison to its own design. Fascinating data to read through.
New to the line this year are the exciting .410 slug, a new 28-gauge slug and a 12-guage 'Tactical Home Defence' slug. The .410 slug is a '¼ ounce slug at a velocity of 1,500 fps and on its box mentions its applications in both shotguns and revolvers.
As equally handgun compatible will be the 5/8-ounce, 28-gauge slug at a velocity of 1,450 fps when loaded in the 28-gauge 'Raging Judge' revolver just introduced by Taurus . It will be nice to have a slug load for the pleasant shooting 28 gauge.
Reduced recoil slug
Designed for maximum impact the 2-3/4" 12 gauge reduced recoil, Tactical Home Defence loading, and to protect innocent bystanders minimizes over-penetration. It is a full diameter 438 grain slug with a velocity of 1,256 fps, expending all its energy within the first 13" of a block of ballistic gelatine.
For critter control or self-defence many homeowners have an alternative with the non-lethal shotgun ammunition. The maker and marketer Lightfield have a variety of non-lethal rubber and polymer projectiles which include loads for the 20 gauge and 410.
Lightfield like to point out that their projectiles are perfect for pain producing warning shot and minimize danger to innocent bystanders, at close range or delivered to the head, neck, upper chest and spine areas do serious injury.
The .410 1-1/2" loading has four 41-caliber rubber buckshot with a total weight of 42 rains. The buckshot have a velocity of 1,400 pfs if fired from a 18" barrelled shotgun. From a 4" barrelled revolver the velocity was 1,150 fps and from a 2" derringer, 1,000 fps.
The 20-gauge 2-3/4" shell is loaded with two 60-caliber rubber balls with a total weight of 67 grains and from an 18" barrel a velocity of 900 fps.
The 12-guage 2-3/4" loadings include the longer ranging, 730-caliber, hard-rubber slug weighing in at 30 grains and with a velocity of 600 fps and is designed o be shot from cylinder or IC barrels only. With a range of just 15 yards this shorter loading contains a kitchen sponge-looking, multi-fingered rubber stat with a weight of 75 grains and a velocity of 850 fps.
