How to Improve Your Rifle Shooting for Hunting

I grew up in rural West Virginia. Sundays in the summer meant church and muzzleloader matches. The standard muzzleloader match consisted of 10 rounds. The 10 rounds were shot offhand, long sticks, short sticks, sitting, and kneeling at 25 and 50 yards. While there were often 100 yard shots, shoot the string, clanger (metal silhouette), and other matches there were the standard. This routine was good practice for hunting not only from the different rests but also focusing on the importance of making one good shot. While few carry shooting sticks into the woods with them (though they are quite useful) it is still good practice for shooting off of tree limbs, fence posts and similar rests.
Practicing with you high powered rifle is best, but can be expensive and hard on the shoulder. Using a .22 rifle for the majority of your practice is fine and won't break the bank or your shoulder. Of course your rifles should always be sighted in from a bench rest, but the majority of your shooting should be done from hunting positions. Shooting off hand teaches a lot of important skills. It helps the shooter to learn trigger control, to time the shot during a wobble, and proper breathing control while shooting. In my hunting experience, shooting offhand is not often needed. Except when a deer or other game animal jumps up unexpectedly, a hunter can almost always find a rest. Practice shooting off of the side of a tree of various size. Even a spindly sapling tree can be used for a rest but you need to practice shooting from this flexible rest. Quickly getting into a sitting or kneeling position and shooting is good practice as well.
Inexpensive .22 LR silhouette targets can be purchased for twenty bucks or less at Wal-Mart and other retailers. These are great for hunting practice as you get immediate feedback on whether or not you hit the target.
To prepare for dealing with buck fever and shooting while out of breath I devised this idea for my son. I held the rifle ready to shoot and had him stand about 50 yards away. On a command he had to drop and do a couple push ups, run to where I was, take the gun and fire 1 shot at a target with me talking in his ear all the way through the shot to provide a distraction. Vary the push ups and length of run (and even the exercises) based on physical condition and age. I have no way to measure the value of this exercise but we had fun doing it, especially when he got to make me run! Above all maintain safety.
