How to Deal with Sleep Paralysis
I am prone to nightmares, and sleep paralysis every couple of months.

For a long time I thought my sleep paralysis was something evil because I read in a girly magazine about another girl who'd experienced this and she said it was the Devil sitting on her chest.
That thought alone made my sleep paralysis all the more terrifying.
For those of you who haven't experienced this I wish I were you. The first time I'd ever gone through it I was 13. I was sleeping on the couch in my living room, and I watched as my mom, sister, and friend walked down the stairs. I could hear what they were talking about, and see the room clearly. My dreams are not quite so vivid, and I'm not the type who knows I'm dreaming when I am so this scared me. I couldn't move an inch, and I remembered screaming but no sound came out. Then a panic attack started to set in, something else I'd never experienced before, and when I finally couldn't take it anymore I woke up; able move, able to speak, and breathing heavily.
I hurried to tell my mom about it, and she said she remembered having those a long time ago. She suggested-if I had it again-to focus on moving my big toe, telling me that it would help wake me up.
It did happen again. Several times for over a decade, and the toe wiggling only mildly helps.
Up until just a few months ago I'd never bothered looking it up. I'm prone to nightmares, and sleep paralysis every couple of months, but as long as I stayed up long enough afterwards, it usually goes away.
Then something happened that made me experience a lot of stress at work, and this stress caused me to have nightmares and anxiety dreams every night, several times a night. Not only that but the sleep paralysis kicked into overdrive, occurring several times a week.
What's was happening was that because I was so wound up in my stress my body was falling asleep before my mind. Usually it's the other way around. This is called predormital sleep paralysis. But I was also having it when I woke up too. My mind would wake up before my body. That's called postdormital sleep paralysis. I believe most people have one or the other. I was having both in the same night. I just couldn't shut my mind down and my body was sick of it.
I'm happy to say that the work stress isn't quite so bad anymore, but what really stopped my sleep paralysis was knowledge. Once I understood that I wasn't having my soul ripped from my body by demonic forces, my mind calmed and when I next had one of these episodes I relaxed, and woke up immediately.
