Hotel Review: Best Western President's Inn, Abilene, Kansas
A review on the Best Western President's Inn in Abilene, KS, focusing on both good and bad aspects of the stay.
With 64 rooms on 2 floors, the hotel itself resembles your basic chain motel. The building has an older look to it and forms a square around a large courtyard. The main selling point for this hotel, in the author's instance, was price, at only $34.00 plus tax for one night. Prices varied by room, going as high as $54.00. Many of the rooms are reserved for business travelers and AARP members, but good prices are also offered for those passing through or staying in the city for tourist purposes.
However, for those looking for a luxurious stay in a swanky hotel, the old adage "You get what you pay for" rings true in the case of this inn.
Though decent size for the solo traveler, certain aspects of the hotel room remind the patron that they are indeed in a city of the past. The key card lock and cable television were good modern distractions from the semi uncomfortable mattress of a rather old bed, a full size that felt more like a twin. If you're not one to be picky about where you sleep, be prepared because the bathroom was obviously done in a time when comfort was not a priority. The toilet was situated under the counter top so that the lid leaned forward against the back of the user. Though spacious enough, the faucets in the shower were backwards and the water seemed to run alternately hot and cold, never staying one temperature for more than 10 seconds.
However, for the patient person who could care less how hot their shower is or how comfortable their bathroom going experience is, the Presidents Inn does indeed have its charm. The service was excellent, the people working the front desk and in the restaurant all friendly, welcoming, and most helpful with any questions. The room itself does lend a historical charm by look and feel, and each room allows for easy balcony access out a sliding door. A large indoor pool and hot tub are housed in courtyard and are open from 7am to 10pm for patron use. The hotel also has a quaint Mexican restaurant as part of its structure for those wanting dinner or a few Margaritas. The food was good and the service was friendly.
Several other reviews have shown issues with cleaning and plumbing problems, and not everyone was happy with the ancient feel of the amenities. If you're planning on staying more than one night, it might be helpful to take into consideration any personal sleep issues, since the mattresses are old and a bit on the lumpy side. Though charming and passing for a night's stay, the Best Western President's Inn in Abilene, KS will never pass for the Hilton.
