The Olympus E-3: The Best Autofocus Digital SLRs Camera?
The Olympus E-3 is a competitor with high end Canon and Nikon cameras. Nikon and Canon loyal customers may just switch to Olympus.
The ergonomics of the Olympus E-3 are exceptional, even though it's appearance isn't as slick as Nikkon and Canon. The hand grip on right is very comfortable and has a secure hold of the camera. The grip goes to the back of the camera with a well-designed spot for the thumb. The buttons and dials are placed in logical positions, but you need to become familiar with them if you are new to Olympus cameras. The Nikon D300 has more controls on the outside, for quicker access, in comparison. I am not very familiar with the Olympus menu, so I wasn't thrilled with the Olympus E-3's menu since I primarily use Nikkon, but I may just need more time to get used to this system.
The Olympus E-3 contains a two and a half inch LCD screen, which is just a little bit smaller than its competitors, however, this didn't bother me. The Olympus E-3 has a good swivel and title screen which is very useful and certainly more useful than a larger screen. I can capture many photos with this camera that I am unable to with other SLRs. The Nikon D300's three inch LCD has great image quality, but the screen is not movable so the live-view is pointless. The Olympus E-3s LCD is not as bright or sharp as the LCD on the Nikkon D300, but the Olympus still wins for the screen.
The Olympus E-3 has a large viewfinder and has great brightness. I prefer the viewfinder on the Olympus E-3 to the viewfinder on both the Canon 5D and the Canon 40D. In comparison to these Canons, the viewfinder on the Olympus E-3 is noticeable better. I believe the viewfinder on the Olympus is the best in it's class.
Autofocus Performance
Amazingly, even in low light areas, the autofocus on the Olympus E-3 is impressive. In low light, it even locks onto the target repeatedly. Even as I tried, I could not fool the accuracy of this auto focus system on the Olympus. The Nikon D300s autofocus in this low light was also impressive, however, I was able to fool it one time. The same thing happened with the Cannon 40d. The speed of the Olympus E-3 also kept up with the lens on the Canon 40d without a hitch.
The Nikon D300 has an AF-S lens giving it awesome autofocus speed and it was just slightly quicker than the E-3. Although the Olympus E-3 claims to have the quickest autofocus speed available, I was unable to duplicate tthe results myself. However, the focus speed on the Olympus E-3 is extremely fast. Ultimately, the Olympus is easily a competitor of the best cameras from both Canon and Nikon.
In most cameras, you also have to be concerned with shutter lag. However, the Olympus E-3 only takes one second to turn it on and then be ready to take a picture. This was confirmed numerous times using many different lenses. The shutter lag was minimal (less than 1 second) and seemed to be equal to the Nikon D300 and the Canon 40d. I believe the Olympus E-3 wins in this category as well.
Conclusions
The E-3 is a phenomenal digital SLR. It is well built and has many professional qualities which will give those who own Canon or Nikon a reason to think. The Olympus E-3 may have found it's niche between the Canon 5d and the Canon 40d. I strongly urge you to consider the Olympus E-3 if you are also considering these Canons. It is by far a must better quality that those cameras. The cost of the Olympus E-3 and the lens cost about $2600.00. For that same amount, one could get a Nikon D300 that offers better image quality and better performance. The end result is: It's great that Olympus can rival Nikon and Canon but Olympus should offer more for the money.
