How to Get First Chair in Band

No matter what instrument you play, you can still become first chair. Although it may not happen over night, if you work hard enough, you can definitely get there.

Consider starting private lessons

If you are really serious about getting better, you should consider getting a private instructor. Look up teachers at colleges nearby or at music shops. Studying with a private teacher will help you a ton. You will be amazed by how different the results are if they are one on one rather than one teacher with many kids. It may be hard at first to work with a private teacher if you start with them after a few years of band, because they are very specific about everything, but once you learn what they have to say, you will be ahead by a long shot. You should practice your lessons more than band, but not to the point where you are failing band class (that would definitely not be good). Private instructors will have you work on your weak spots the most, but that is the best way to become a better instrumentalist (and to get first chair).

Challenge Yourself

Look for music that will challenge you but won't be completely over your head. If you challenge yourself, you will get a lot better faster. Try to practice the challenging music you find at least once a day. The only thing about practicing challenging music, is you have to practice it right if you want any results. If you play it all wrong, you aren't getting any better, in fact, you're getting worse. A private instructor is going to challenge you anyways, so if you have one, you won't have to do too much on your own (you probably won't have time to do too much on your own). Try to get a metronome at a music store. It will help you stay on the beat and will improve your rhythms immensely.

Get inspired

Look up songs on YouTube featuring your instrument. If you have an mp3 player, download them and listen to them as often as you can. Don't just download the first five songs you see. Go through quite a few of them, and find the ones you like best, the ones you would prefer listening to rather than some of your other music. If you play them at night, while you are trying to sleep, it might even help you fall asleep (unless you are obsessed with classical music, like myself). Ask your parents to bring you to concerts, whether that means your high school band concerts (if you are in middle or elementary school), your city's symphony concerts, or your state's symphony's concerts (which are amazing). Try to listen to some of your music first and often, because once you go to the concerts you will be able to hear your instrument.

Practice

While a lot of kids might dread this word, practice does make perfect. Find some song books you like at a local music store, if you do, you'll want to practice all the time, because you'll be excited about it. Practice your band songs, and once you get them, your lesson assignments. Strive to get your lessons assignments as perfect as you can get them. Your lesson assignments are the ones that will get you better (faster, at least). If you try hard enough, you can reach any goal of yours. Once you get started into it, it becomes fun.
