A Story About the Man in the Kayak
This is a true story of a strange event my husband and I witnessed recently on a rainy day. Keeping a camera phone nearby paid off because we were able to capture the event.
Looking straight ahead before pulling out of the parking area, there is this person running down a busy road with a kayak on his back.
"Honey, look at that!" I cry out.
He looks and is so amazed himself. I mean how many times do you see someone running down the road with a kayak on his back in the rain.
"Honey pull the car over, I am so going to Facebook this!"
My husband laughs at my comment, pulling over to get closer to this person. The man in the kayak is now going down into the ditch, which is full of water and begins to put his Kayak in the water.
"Honey, here is my phone, please take a couple pictures."
As the rain pours into the car on top of his head, he takes a couple pictures, mumbling something like, "you owe me!"
We get home and I cannot wait to put them on Facebook. I then get the idea to send them to our local news, which is on Facebook. It was about 10 minutes later when the producer sends me a message, saying they are going to put the pictures on the five o'clock news. I mean this is exciting stuff in my retired, sometimes rather dull world.
5 p.m. rolls around and I am sitting in front of the TV, waiting for the news to come on. With my phone securely in my hand, I am ready to record the segment. I know this sounds strange but just bear with me, my mom may want to hear my name on the news.
"Babe, it will probably be at the end of the news segment, I'm just sayin'."
Ignoring my polite husband, I continue to wait…with my phone in my hand and finger on the red button. I got this I think to myself! I wait and wait until all of sudden the most unthinkable thing happens, my phone dies.
Looking up, and in a panic mode, "Honey, may I use you phone?"
Looking at me with a smirk, he hands me his phone.
Not looking at him, I say under my breath, "What do I owe you now?"
He is still smirking and certainly heard me, "I'm thinkin,'" he says.
I have the phone all ready to record as soon as the segment comes on. Then it happens, first the picture, then they say…courtesy of _____________and gives my whole name.
"HAHAHAHA" I laugh loudly…"Oh shoot the recorder button is off!"
Then my phone rings, which is plugged into the wall. It is my friend Mel. She is excited, must be a Texas thing,
"I was cooking in the kitchen, and I heard your name on the news. I run in and see this person in a kayak…I missed it…MY GOSH were you kayaking?"
I explain what happened, while she continues laughing in my ear. Suddenly, my husband comes to get me.
"Babe, they flashed your name again but added more. They had to do a fire and rescue on the person in the kayak!"
"OH MY GOSH, I HOPE HE IS OK!" I say blurting out in my excitement. "Did you record it?"
