Gun Review: Mossberg 500A Pump Shotgun
The Mossberg 500A is one of the most commonly encountered pump action shotguns in America. This article reviews the Mossberg 500A for hunters and others.
The Mossberg 500A that I have was made in the mid 1990's. Used models such as this can be commonly found for less than $150 often closer to $100 at gun shops, pawn shops, and gun shows. This Mossberg 500A is a 12 gauge, will accept 3 inch shells and has a 28 inch barrel with a vented rib. The Mossberg 500A accepts Accu-Choke tubes that can be purchased for less than $20 and is commonly found in most areas or can be easily ordered online. The shotgun weighs about 7 pounds (unloaded) and is about 48 inches long. The stock is made of wood that is stained fairly dark. The stock is checkered on both the fore-end and rear stock. The finish and fit of the wood and metal are not perfect, but it is more than adequate for a hunting gun. The stock also is equipped with a recoil pad.
Functionally, the Mossberg 500A has a lot of movement in the action but it works. The play doesn't make for a smooth feel but as long as it extracts and ejects the old and loads the new then I am happy. The bead front sight is perhaps a bit small, but the vent rib does help to get the shotgun pointed quickly. The bolt release is located behind and to the left of the trigger guard and is easy to find and use. The trigger itself is quite stiff however the pull is not long and the trigger breaks well (this shotgun is well used, which may have helped to smooth out the trigger). The tang mounted safety is easy to operate and can be quickly seen due to its placement. The tang mounted safety makes the Mossberg 500A easy to operate for right handers as well as left handers. I have only patterned the gun a few times but it appeared to shoot to the point of aim and throw an even pattern.
