Our Gun Problem
The argument for gun restriction - and the reason it is hopeless.
I do not believe people truly realizes how utterly damaging such an attitude can be to American life. If you take a stance on a subject and your blood starts to boil when that opinion is challenged to the point where meaningful discussion is nearly impossible, then you threaten our ability to respond to problems in society.
Moving past the generic ranting, the controversy surrounding gun rights has dealt a lot of irreparable damage to our nation. Whether you are patriotic or not, it is hard to deny that America is behind the rest of the world in a lot of social policy developments (you might consider this a good thing if you disapprove of social change). I believe this lag in modern legal advancements has given opponents of many issues, namely gun rights, a sort of "window of opportunity". To elaborate, I think the wealthy and informed opponents of gun restriction of any sort saw the various types of harsh gun legislation being established in European countries and quickly used their own influence to stall any adoption of these policies into America. There are certainly many who do support the 2nd amendment as an ultimatum on armed citizens; that there should be absolutely no restriction on the weaponry that the average American can possess. I, however, believe the 2nd amendment has been twisted, manipulated, and shoved down the most easily influenced Americans' throats to the point where it is almost an insult to the founding fathers that wrote it.
While talking about this amendment, you MUST remember that, at the time it was written, it literally took 1-2 minutes to reload your weapon. There were no super-powered assault weapons that could slaughter a crowd of 30 in a matter of seconds. Your gun was capable of shooting one incredibly inaccurate and not very powerful shot (by today's standards) every 1-2 minutes. Do you realize how many people can be killed in 2 minutes nowadays? I do not believe it was ever the intention of the founding fathers to permit the collection of extremely deadly weapons to the point where one household holds the firepower to flatten a small army.
The 2nd amendment has been warped into an incredibly difficult matter to discuss. How is it possible to have meaningful debate about legislation regarding how deadly any given citizen is allowed to be when a third of your population supports a party who believes the 2nd amendment should be interpreted as if we are still at war with Britain? It isn't. And that is exactly the goal of the aforementioned wealthy opponents of gun restrictions. The NRA is probably the most relevant culprit. It is not a coincidence how much money the NRA rakes in from gun producers. It is incredibly profitable to support an organization that provides a financial and political barrier from the restriction of production of your own products. Basically, these producers are throwing themselves behind the NRA so they can endlessly manufacture weapons that will always have a reliable market. And if sales are falling behind, all you have to do is ask the NRA to send out a warning that their members' rights as citizens are in danger! People flock to gun stores every time Obama mentions guns because the NRA scares them into thinking that maybe, just maybe, there will not be any gun stores by tomorrow.
What is the result? Three hundred and fifty MILLION firearms in the United States ALONE. More guns than people. This is what ties back into my first point. We cannot allow ourselves to take immovable stances on topics. Tying such anger and resentment to any topic is dangerous to the political environment. It leads to extreme situations that probably cannot and will not ever be fixed. You cannot limit firearm ownership and crack down on violence when there are more firearms than citizens. You might stand a chance if you have ~30 guns for every 100 citizens, like in France and Germany. You have an even greater chance if there are 6 guns per 100 people like in England! But if you have guns coming out of your ears like the United States, there is very little hope for any kind of prevention. The gun rights debate is nearly hopeless. We need to do whatever we can to stop this situation from developing again; we cannot afford to throw a critical issue like healthcare or immigration to the wolves.
