Death of Jackass Star, Ryan Dunn, and Roger Ebert Tweet Create Stir

Ryan Dunn and Zachary Hartwell, of Jackass fame, died as a result of a car accident early Monday morning. Movie critic Roger Ebert's Twitter post appears to be causing more controversy than the accident itself. Bam Margera and others respond.

Ryan Dunn, of Jackass fame, and Zachary Hartwell, a production assistant on Jackass 2, died of blunt and thermal trauma caused by a car accident early Monday morning, the Chester County Coroner's Office said Tuesday. Dunn was 34, Hartwell 30, and the sudden loss is a tragedy.

In an unfortunate act of limited thinking and poor timing, longtime film critic Roger Ebert helped set off a firestorm on Twitter yesterday, when he commented, "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive."

It is not clear whether alcohol was involved, and the toxicology report of the accident is not expected to be available for 4 to 6 weeks. Whether it is reasonable to assume alcohol was the cause is up for debate. To take it upon yourself to declare to your four-hundred thousand Twitter fans that Ryan Dunn was drunk and a jackass, mere hours after his death, is something you probably should not do.

Despite apologizing for the receipt of his comment, Ebert is the object of an avalanche of criticism. Friend of Ryan Dunn, Jackass costar, Brandon "Bam" Margera, understandably upset, is among the notable respondents. In his statement Margera invites Ebert to "shut your fat f***ing mouth." Many of the day's posts to Ebert are of a similar timbre.

Some even wish misfortune befall Ebert's friends and family, "so you know what it feels like." Roger Ebert is not celebrating the death of Ryan Dunn. He is not even making light of it. He is asserting his opinion about the idiocy of drunk driving. His handling of the matter was poorly conceived, and for that he sorry, but should you wish death upon someone because you don't like something they said?

Mr. Ebert is no stranger to personal tragedy. In 1999, Gene Siskel, Ebert's close friend and At the Movies partner, died of complications resulting from surgery on a cancerous brain tumor. Surely a day does not go by when this is not on his mind, so when Ebert says he was not trying to be cruel, you can probably take him at his word.

Emotions are understandably running wild, but if you are upset over this event, perhaps you should focus on Dunn's behavior rather than Ebert's. Dunn may or may not have been drunk, but evidence at the crash site reveals he was behind the wheel of a car traveling in excess of 100mph with two human lives in his hands.

The producers of Jackass and similarly dubious entertainment are not responsible for anyone's reckless behavior, but with so much of it out there, it is easy to adopt the mindset that our actions, no matter how dangerous, have no real consequences. This is not true.

If you don't do something stupid when you're young, then you aren't taking full advantage of your childhood. And yes, it is a total hoot to hit your friend in the genitals when he's not expecting it. But when heavy machinery is involved, and fiery destruction and death are even a slight possible outcome, don't do it. Whatever it is.
